FORMER QUEENS and BROOKLYN NYC RESIDENT MASSACRES TWELVE AT THE CAPITAL’S NAVY YARD
Aaron Alexis was 34 years old when he went on a shooting rampage at the Washington Navy Yard on September 17, 2013. He was a decorated military veteran who had lived in both Queens and Brooklyn, and had served full time in the US Navy’s Reserve from May 2007 to January 2011. He was born in Flushing, Queens, according to the FBI, was raised in Brooklyn, New York, and currently lived in Fort Worth, Texas. He received a general discharge from the Navy Reserve in 2011.
I say ‘was’ 34 years old, and ‘was’ a decorated military veteran because Aaron Alexis was killed in one of the several gun battles with police. Mr. Alexis had been a civilian information technology contractor for the Navy. It was reported that Mr. Alexis had 2 gun related contacts with the law. The motive and how he breached the Navy Yard security remains an open question for now. He entered the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building approximately 8:20 am, and started shooting victims from a 4th floor atrium. Two separate identification badges are required, one to get on the base, and another to access the building. One can only wonder what would cause this young man to commit such a horrific act of violence. I am sure as I write this blog the FBI and other law enforcement are searching through every aspect of Mr. Alexis’s life to determine the motive, including possible terrorist ties.
Had Mr. Alexis not been killed in the gun battle with the police, he would be facing numerous criminal charges, including, Murder, Assault, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Burglary, Trespass, and Reckless Endangerment.
