Does drunk driving increase during the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

On Behalf of | May 4, 2017 | Drunk Driving

New York Rangers fans are certainly in a better mood after winning a game in the eastern conference playoffs. Much is said about the playoff atmosphere at a hockey game, especially in Madison Square Garden. Indeed, the energy is undeniable, but how much is that energy due to the amount of alcohol fans consume?

According to researchers from the University of Minnesota, quite a few hockey fans are legally drunk while at the game. In fact, people under the age of 35 at sporting events were eight times more likely to be drunk than other fans, and those who had a few drinks to “loosen up” before the game were 14 times more likely to drunk while at the game.

All the alcohol and exuberance could lead to dangerous outcomes after the game. Indeed, many people who go into the city for games use public transportation; but what happens to drunk fans after they reach their respective train stations and transfer to their personal cars?

It is important for drivers to realize that during playoff season, law enforcement officers are still looking for drunk drivers. It is also critical to understand that the penalties for a drunk driving conviction can be particularly harsh. Your driving privileges could be negatively affected and you could be subject to jail time.

Nevertheless, a drunk driving arrest does not necessarily translate into a drunk driving conviction. An experienced criminal defense attorney can analyze the facts of your case and find helpful defenses so that you may avoid a conviction.
