Another gang sweep results in 21 indictments

In a sweep of alleged gang members by law enforcement agencies in New York, 21 reported gang members were indicted for allegedly participating in a ring involved in drug trafficking in the Bronx. The indictments were reported by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York on May 11.

Reportedly, the drug trafficking ring operated in the area around the Diego Beekman Houses. Some of the people who were indicted are allegedly members of the Low Rider Brims, a subsidiary of the Bloods. Others who were charged are allegedly members of the Young Shooters. Both groups are street gangs that are based in the South Bronx.

Authorities claim those who were indicted have operated the drug trafficking ring in the area since 2010. Of the 21 charged, 14 are in custody with 12 being arrested on May 10 and 11 during a takedown sweep. Search warrants were executed on Wednesday at three places. Police officials state that they recovered cocaine, marijuana, crack cocaine, gang paperwork and ammunition as a result of those searches. This follows the largest gang takedown in the city’s history in which 120 members of gangs were indicted two weeks previously for a multitude of offenses.

People who are facing multiple charges may want to get help as quickly as they possibly can. A criminal defense attorney may be able to investigate the case and then negotiate with the prosecutor for a plea to a reduced charge in exchange for dismissal of some of the counts. A lawyer may also be able to challenge the identification of his or her client as being a participant in a trafficking ring by filing evidentiary motions.
