If you are a victim of domestic violence, it is important that you know the steps you need to take to protect yourself and any vulnerable individuals like your children from an abusive partner.
Domestic violence is any abusive act from an intimate partner such as a current or former spouse or a registered domestic partner. Domestic violence can be physical, emotional or even sexual. Here are three steps you need to take if you are a victim of domestic violence:
Call the police
If your health and well-being or that of the people you care about, is threatened, do not hesitate to call the police. Besides coming to your rescue, the police will also file a report that you may find helpful later.
Document the incident
Evidence is extremely important. For every abuse incident, be sure to note down exactly what happened, where it happed, injuries you sustained as well as any witnesses that were present. Recording the abuse incidents (audios, videos and photos) and any threatening voicemails, emails and text messages can also help.
Come up with an escape plan
For the sake of your safety, it is important that you get away from your abuser. However, doing so without a plan can be counterproductive. Even if your abuser is sorry for their actions, consider obtaining a restraining order against them.
Violence towards a spouse is both wrong and illegal. If you are in an abusive relationship, it is important that you understand how you can protect your rights and well-being.
