The justice system takes any form of violence extremely seriously. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for some people to make false domestic violence claims against family members. If you are falsely accused of domestic assault, you need to take the charges seriously.

If you are accused of domestic assault, or any form of domestic violence, you need to know what to do as well as the mistakes to avoid going forward.

But why do people make false domestic violence claims?

To help come up with an effective defense, it helps to start off by understanding why people make false domestic violence accusations in the first place. While there is a myriad of reasons why people falsely accuse others of domestic assault, here are the most common ones:

During divorce or child custody cases – Some couples make false domestic violence accusations to gain an upper hand during the divorce or child custody case.

To seek vengeance – A disgruntled spouse might falsely lie to get their ex in trouble following a bitter break-up.

Here are two things you need if you are falsely accused of domestic violence;

Cut off any contact with your accuser

As much as you can, cut off all interactions with your accuser. This is especially important if they are exhibiting narcissistic tendencies. The more you keep in touch with your accuser, the more likely they will fabricate more lies against you.

Keep your cool

Being accused of a crime you did not commit can be unsettling, to say the least. However, this is not the time to lose your cool and do something you will regret. No matter the circumstance, do not give the court the impression that you are short-tempered.
