On Behalf of | Apr 7, 2023 | Domestic Violence

As the accused person in a domestic violence case, it’s crucial to understand the various types of domestic violence that you may be charged with. While many cases focus on physical abuse, it’s possible that other forms will also be present.

Besides physical abuse, which includes things like hitting, slapping, punching, kicking or using a weapon to cause injury, cases may also include claims of these types of abuse:

Emotional abuse

Emotionally abusing your partner occurs by consistently belittling them, insulting them or making them feel worthless. This can also involve controlling their actions, isolating them from friends and family or using threats to instill fear.

Psychological abuse

This type of abuse involves manipulating your partner’s perception of reality or their emotional state. You may be accused of using gaslighting techniques, making them doubt their own memories and experiences or engaging in other manipulative behaviors to gain control over them.

Sexual abuse

You could be charged with forcing or coercing your partner into unwanted sexual activities, which may include sexual assault, rape or any other non-consensual sexual act.

Financial abuse

You may be accused of controlling your partner’s access to financial resources, such as their income or joint accounts, to make them financially dependent on you. This can include withholding money, preventing them from working or controlling their spending.

Stalking or harassment

It’s also possible to be accused of engaging in a pattern of unwanted and intrusive behaviors, such as following your partner, monitoring their communications or showing up uninvited to their workplace or home.

It’s important to remember that domestic violence is a serious issue, and if you’re accused of any of these behaviors, it’s essential to learn your options for dealing with the charges. Some options might be time-sensitive, so act quickly.
