New York man faces shoplifting charges

A 24-year-old New York man is facing charges for conspiracy to commit shoplifting and shoplifting after an incident that occurred on March 16. Employees at the Milltown Home Depot said that a man tried to leave the store with about $4,000 worth of merchandise in a shopping cart at around 4:30 p.m.

A police statement says that security confronted the man, and he attacked the employee and fled through the parking lot. He reportedly left in a white Cadillac. Police learned that others may have been involved who did not flee.

About an hour later, they found the man that they later took into custody near a Target. Allegedly, he was with the man who tried to steal the merchandise. His bail was set at $25,000, and police are continuing to seek other suspects.

Shoplifting charges such as these might be more serious than a person initially realizes. There can be serious consequences, and people who are facing such charges might want to discuss their options with a criminal defense attorney. The prosecution may offer a plea bargain in which the person pleads guilty to lesser charges and receives a lighter sentence. However, people who believes themselves to be innocent might want to go to court. There may be a number of defenses available. For example, eyewitness identifications may be unreliable, and an attorney might be able to introduce doubts about its accuracy. In a case like this one, a person might also be with someone who shoplifts without being an accomplice. In such a case, people might argue that they did not know what the person’s intentions were.
