Man charged with drunk driving

On Nov. 8, it was reported that a New York man was taken into police custody on Oct. 30 after he was accused of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Authorities stated that the 31-year-old man was seen driving across multiple lanes and across the center median.

The man was seen driving erratically on Montauk Highway near Amy’s Lane in South Hampton at approximately 4:30 p.m. Authorities stated that, in addition to crossing into the center median, the man’s 2000 Honda also had a defective taillight. After a traffic stop was conducted, the police said that he had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and alcohol on his breath. Additionally, he was unable to stand steady on his feet when he was asked to exit the vehicle.

Ultimately, the man was charged with misdemeanor drunk driving. He will also face charges aggravated DWI for being well over the .08 percent limit. His bail was set at $500 as he had no prior history of drunk driving.

When people are accused of drunk driving, they face serious consequences if a conviction is obtained even if this is only their first offense. They could have their driver’s license suspended, making it more difficult for them to get to work. They could also face a fine or even jail time depending on the circumstances surrounding their case. As such, they may want to obtain the assistance of a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible so that the allegations can be countered. One possible defense could be to attack the initial traffic stop that led to the charge as being made without the requisite reasonable suspicion.
